I thought that I better write a quick newsletter today, especially since I missed two out of the last four weeks. Mid-summer is kind of crazy on the farm and there does not seem to be a whole lot of free time. Last week we (the family) spent a few days camping at keji. It was nice to get away for a little bit.
We picked the first globe artichokes a couple days ago. It looks like we will have a few field cukes as well this week. Eggplants and peppers are within two weeks from production. The cucumbers, squash and melons are all difficult this year. We have only recently had sufficient heat for these crops to grow well. We have also had a lot of problems with an insect called the striped cucumber beetle. Between the bugs and the weather these crops range from unimpressive to lousy. We do expect production but it will be late and limited in volume.
Berries look really good right now. Both raspberries and blueberries are now producing and should be in the CSA boxes this week. The first plums (early golden) will soon be ripe. Peaches and early apples are also nearly ready. The plums,pears, and apples all look like a good crop this year. Peaches look very light; maybe less than half a crop.
Besides harvesting and weeding on a daily basis, we are still planting each week. One greenhouse is full of transplants again and will be planted out this week. These are late cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, kale, collard, endive, fennel, and radicchio plants. We will also be direct seeding late carrots, beets, winter radishes, and lots of strange seeds I bought that I cannot pronounce.
