It is sunday evening and rain is coming tonight. This is actually a very welcome thing right now. The spring was very wet and cold and I was not planning to complain about sunny and breezy days anytime soon. In this area of the valley we have not had any real rain for over three weeks. The plants are suffering now and the rain will be great.
Debra and I spent some time this afternoon at a new farmers gathering held in Black River. It was interesting talking to a lot of people with really diverse ideas about small scale farming, organic farming, and sustainable living. We got away from the kids by bribing them with ice cream and a visit from grammy (my mother).
We hope to transplant the last of the winter squash this week. There are also many kale, cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage plants to set out. These plantings have been postponed because of the weather.Some of the teenage employees are starting to work part time now with school winding down. They will be weeding, planting, and picking lots of peas.
The boxes will have snap peas in them this week. We may also be able to put shell peas in but I have to check if we have enough ready yet. By next week we will have lots of sno peas, snap peas, and shelling peas.Each box will also be getting a head of boston lettuce this week. Kohlrabi, broccoli, carrots, nappa, and baby zucchini have all been consumed by Debra and I but they still need a few days before I have enough for the csa. Carrots should be on next week for sure. This time of year is really interesting on a small mixed farm like ours. Each week their will be new vegetables coming on. Strawberries are almost ready and will soon be followed with various currants, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries and cherries. We have over ten types of melons planted as well although I can never get them to mature until late summer (mid august). One of my regular customers told me to sing songs to the melons to make them grow. Sadly I am much too old fashioned to subscribe to this production model. Expect melons in august.
