We had a full day of rain today and I am thankful for it. The soil was getting very dry over the last two or three weeks and we needed the moisture. Things are starting to grow and the diversity of our vegetable offerings will expand a lot over the next month. We have now planted the field tomatoes as well as most of the peppers. The first big melon planting is about one week away from being transplanted outside. We are picking field grown mixed greens, arugula, and radishes. I expect that rapini and chop sum and some pac choi will be ready this week. We will probably have some toscano kale and Swiss chard ready by the weekend. I suspect that we are about a month away from the exciting spring vegetables like baby carrots, snap peas, sno peas, Napa, baby zucchini, and kohlrabi. Until then it is mostly leafy greens, rhubarb, radishes, spring turnips, and still some more apples.
I did not really know what to expect for a fruit crop this season after the extreme drought conditions last year. A lot of us thought that the bloom might be weak or reduced because of the low energy of the trees after last seasons dry weather but this does not seem to be the case. The peaches, plums, Cherries, nectarines, pears, and apples all seem to have had a full bloom. Pears and apples are still in blossom with the stone fruit nearing completion of the bloom period. Things are looking fairly positive at this point and I am looking forward to the increasing crop selection over the next several weeks.
Have a good week.
