There is a fair amount of rain in the forecast for Thursday night and Friday and I hope we get it. We just came in from the vegetable field and things are looking very good but the soil is dry for the time of year. We moved row covers off of radish plantings and weeded them. Tomorrow we will do the same to the Asian greens, arugula, hakurei turnips, carrots, and peas. The transplanted Swiss chard and lettuce plants have doubled in size under the row covers. We will need to hoe and weed them as well in the next few days.
Tomorrow we will transplant the first nappa plants outside as well as the first zucchini plants. Both plantings will go under row covers for warmth and insect protection. If the weather turns very cold we will double the row covers on the zucchini plants to help protect them from frost. I typically plant these crops between April 30th and May 5th. It is a bit risky but they usually survive and produce very early crops.
The CSA boxes today have a small bunch of cilantro as well as a couple of fresh garlics. Use the garlic cooked with some tofu or pan fried rice. It also adds a lot of flavour to fried chicken dishes. The small apples in the boxes are called elstar. They are one of my favourite eating apples despite the somewhat pathetic size. Next week we will put some baking apples in the boxes along with the first rhubarb (hopefully). It is the time of year where new crops will be coming on stream regularly and will continue to for some time.
Have a good week.
