Looks like the weather is going to be very good for the rest of the week. We are finally getting some warm temperatures after a fairly cold and overcast spring. We have been spending time planting peppers over the last week and eggplants will go out today. These will be protected with row covers for cold and insects. We had time to hoe all the zucchini plantings yesterday and they look very good. Things will change very rapidly on the farm over the next month. Right now we are still picking a few greens, rhubarb, radishes and similar things. I would say that within a month we will be starting a few baby bunched carrots, zucchini, sno-peas, snap peas, cabbages, kohlrabi, nappa, and various herbs. Radicchio and fennel as well by late June or early July. Some of the slower growing greens like toscano kale and swiss chard will be ready in just over a week.
Almost all of the tree fruit looks promising so far. We have a good fruit set on peaches and cherries as well as most (but not all) of the plums. The majority of apple varieties are also looking good at this point as are the pears. Many of the fruit trees are already nearing the end of the blossoming period.
Just to let all Halifax CSA customers know; the grainery will be open only for CSA pickup tomorrow. The grainery is closed for renovations but Melannie will be there as usual and will facilitate the CSA. I will be coming in to Halifax at 6:30 to pick up the empty totes so please pick up your CSA box not later than 6:30. Thank you.
Have a good week.
