I\'m not sure how other people feel but I am very tired of this ongoing snow and wintery weather. The winter has been consistent in that we have had steady cold weather with a little snow. We did not have any crazy snowfall events and we did not have any extreme cold periods either. I hope that after this week we are finished with snow. We planted the first outside crops about twelve days ago. We planted radishes, hakurei turnips, Asian greens, arugula, carrots, sno peas, and snap peas. Everything is covered with floating roe covers for protection. I was surprised yesterday when I looked under the row covers and noticed that the first radishes and turnips have come up and look good. Surprising that they can germinate and grow in this weather. The micro greens from the heated greeenhouses will soon come to an end. The final spring planting was seeded today. The greenhouse space is getting very full with all the transplants for spring planting outside. We are starting to pick some greens like arugula, spinach, and mixed greens from the unheated cold frames now. This will continue for a few weeks. We have transplanted new crops like leaf lettuces, romaine, cilantro, and green onions between the existing rows and will soon be harvesting them. Hopefully by the end of the month if things warm up a bit. My first tomato plants are about sixteen inches high in the heated greenhouses now and we hope to begin planting them into the unheated coldframes by the weekend. The forecast is still showing nightime temperatures of around minus four for the next few days so I am waiting. Almost all of this first planting are the sun gold cherry type (the very sweet orange ones). We will fill four coldframes with the sungold cherry tomatoes. I expect them to begin blossoming in about ten days. Next week the first transplants will be planted in the field under row covers. First to go out will be various lettuces, kohlrabi, different cabbages, and lots of kale and chard. About two weeks later we will plant out the broccoli, broccolini, cauliflowers, radicchio, nappa, and fennel. These plants bolt to seed much easier from weather stress so I tend to wait until late April to transplant. I have done this long enough now to see what can happen and I am more cautious than I used to be. We have been pruning the fruit trees over the last three months and are almost finished. This will be the first year in a long time when we will actually get every fruit tree pruned. It is always my intention but we usually run out of time. We have almost finished cutting the firewood for the year as well. We heat the main greenhouse as well as our house with wood that we cut. We seldom have to cut in our woodlot because there is enough wood just trimming the edges of the wood back that constantly are encroaching on the different fields. Have a good week. Happy spring. t
