Hutten Family Farm Newsletter for Thursday Dec 12, 2024

I guess with the snow on the ground this past week I can assume that the season is coming to an end. We still picked kalettes and brussels sprouts and the last few cabbage today in the snow. With the warm weather now we are hoping to get back to the fields and harvest the remaining crops tomorrow and friday. We still have some carrots and salsify and burdock root in the fields as well as some kale and chard and a few random chicory type plants. With the ground thawing overnight it might be our last oppertunity to get the root vegetables out. Overall 2024 was a very good growing season. The crops were almost all successful and we had weather for most of the growing season that was pretty much what we wanted. I think it was a much needed crop year for a lot of producers; especially those that had weather related problems in 2023. It was also nice to have the stone fruit crops like peaches and plums back on after the complete crop failure last season. It is quite humbling when you stop and think about how dependant we are on the weather that we get each growing season. With the exception of orange carrots we have a really nice selection of storage produce for the coming winter. All five of the unheated greenhouses are planted with salad type greens and we expect to begin some harvesting soon after Christmas. The heated greenhouse will be seeded next week with various types of micro greens. They will begin appearing in early January. The bulk of my seed for the micro greens is somewhere in some warehouse thanks to the postal strike but I have re-ordered some and will get it shipped by courier so I can begin planting. Hopefully the labour dispute with Canada Post gets resolved and the seed shows up someday. This coming Wednesay (December 18th) will be the final CSA delivery of 2024. Because Christmas and New Years day both fall on a Wednesday there will be two weeks without delivery. Everything should return to normal on January 8th. We would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and hope you all have time to spend with friends and family over the next few weeks. ted
