It is kind of feeling like spring is here now. We have most of the cold frames planted with new crops and will begin harvesting things like spring hakurei turnips within two weeks. I think that the first heads of frisee lettuce will be ready in a couple weeks as well as romaine in about three weeks. We are still picking some overwintered mixed greens and spinach as well.
We started planting outside last week monday, April 1st. We seeded radishes, hakurei turnips, arugula, and some mixed Asian greens. I noticed that the first radishes were already up this past monday (seven days) under the row covers. This week we started planting transplants outside under row covers. We planted cabbage, kohlrabi, swiss chard, lots of lettuces, green onions, and a few other random things. We should start harvesting outside in May.
We are also seeding every couple days in the heated greenhouse. Nappa is almost ready to go outside as well as spring fennel and radicchio. The first cherry tomatoes are ready to be planted into high tunnels in a couple weeks. Chinese long beans and yellow pole beans will also be planted in the high tunnels in just over two weeks. I seeded pattypans and zucchini yesterday in plug trays in the heated greenhouse. They take about three weeks to make a small transplant at which point we will plant them outside and cover them for frost protection and insect control. It is a bit risky to start zucchini so early but most of the times it seems to work.
Most of the land that we are planting thus far has been relatively sandy soil on a south facing slope. We can only plant about half of the slope because it is still too wet on the bottom. If the weather cooperates I will plant the lower half in another ten days or so.
Most of the root vegetables from last year are sold out now. We still have a few dragon carrots and purple carrots left but they are selling quickly. Most things like daikon and kohlrabi and beets and turnips are nearing the end as well and we are completely sold out of cabbage. The next cabbage I will eat will be in mid June and it will be an arrowhead cabbage that we planted this past week. It is kind of nice to take a break from eating cabbage.
