Another week of mild weather and the greens are starting to grow faster. I hope that people are getting tired of winter storage crops because you will be eating at least 50 % greens in the boxes very soon. We are also getting very low on a lot of the root crops now which is pretty typical of most seasons. We have started quite a few seedlings in the heated greenhouse for the coming crop year. We have seeded tomatoes, peppers, early lettuce, parsley, celeriac, green onions, spring kohlrabi, cabbages, and broccoli. We have also transplanted romaine lettuce, leaf lettuce, spring onions, and cilantro from the heated greenhouse into the unheated cold frames. These plants were seeded about five weeks ago and they will be ready to begin harvesting in another four to five weeks if all goes well. We covered the transplants with floating row covers to protect them from the recent cold snap. We are picking spinach and mixed salad greens from unheated coldframes right now. Kale, arugula, and green onions will follow soon. This time of year we begin taking out some of the overwintered crops that were planted in October of last year and replace them with new seeded crops like hakurei turnips, radishes, and Asian mustards. It is a difficult thing to take out crops that are producing well but I have to do this to maintain consistent production of new and interesting green vegetables for both CSA and the market. I suspect that we are going to have an early spring. There is no frost in the ground and the snow is basically gone . Everything is very muddy right now but I would not be surprised if some small plots of land with sandy soil will be ready to plant by the end of March. I am timing the very first transplants to plant outside around mid-April. All of these crazy early plantings will be protected by at least one layer of floating row covers for at least the first month of growth. Things feel like they will get busy soon. Have a good week t
