Hutten Family Farm Newsletter for Tuesday Jan 2, 2024

Just a reminder that the CSA is back on schedule following the holiday break. Both Halifax and Kentville deliveries resume tomorrow, January 3rd. Over the holidays I had some time to look back at the 2023 growing season from start to finish. It was without doubt the most difficult growing season that I have had the pleasure of experiencing in the last few decades. We did have some crops that responded well to the excessive and constant rain but there were also quite a few failures. Even some of the winter storage crops like cabbage that did very well are starting to show some signs of a wet growing season. I am still pretty happy with them when you consider the season. We still have a few squash varieties left but they have also not stored as well as usual. Carrots and daikon both did very well and are holding good in storage. Kohlrabi loved this season as well although it is a very resistant crop in a lot of different weather years. The only time it has "failed" as a crop was when I forgot to plant it. I have started seeding some microgreens and other small crops in the heated greenhouse. They should be ready before the end of the month. I also expect to pick some spinach and mixed greens in the coldframes in the next few weeks. Field grown kale is almost completely sold out now so the next kale will be baby kale from the spring coldframes. It is doing quite well as are most of the greens because the winter so far has been very mild. We have started pruning in the fruit trees. There does not seem to be many dead stone fruit trees despite the polar vortex a year ago. There is significant dead wood and partial branches in some of the peach trees but most of them did leaf out and grow last summer despite a very late start. It was the first year in memory that we had a complete loss of all peaches, cherries, and basically all plums. The trees look ok now and I think that they will all be able to crop in 2024. I'm going to bed. I hope that everyone enjoyed some time off over the holidays. Happy New Year. t
