I hope that everyone survived the storm without significant injury or damage. I realize that many people in Halifax still are living without electricity. The valley was not hit nearly as bad as people living in other parts of the province and elsewhere. There was some damage to the apple crop in the valley however we escaped it on our small farm. We are situated at the base of the North mountain in Lakeville and our fruit trees are planted on the lower slopes of the mountain. We had really good natural protection from the north and north-west winds.
There is a lot of changes coming with fall crops starting now. This weeks CSA has romaine, hakurei turnips, pac choi, red and green peppers, tomatoes, honeyboat squash, plums, peaches, and ginger. I am starting to pick a few cauliflower and it will be in the boxes by next week. We are also starting to pick some nappa and more broccoli. Cabbages are coming soon as well as other types of squash. Overall the fall crops look good. We are very busy trying to harvest many different crops to sell weekly as well as for winter storage. Apples are about 30% harvested now with about a month of picking still to go. Hopefully the next month will be less eventful than the past week.
