Hutten Family Farm Newsletter for Wednesday Dec 21, 2011

Hopefully by the time that you get this newsletter you will have remembered to pick up your CSA box. Because quite a few people were on hold this week, our box count was down and I managed to pick enough spinach for everyone. The spinach was from unheated coldframes and the brussels sprouts and the leeks were fresh picked from the fields. That's pretty amazing for the week before Christmas. What crazy activist said that global warming was bad ? Maybe 'scary' is a better way of describing it.
This week kind of signals the end of my busy season. During the week between Christmas and the new year we do not attend the farmers market although we will ship CSA boxes. This typically is the only week of the year when I do not pick or pack any produce for the market. Unless I make stupid decisions, the work load and the pace of my life will be slower over the next six or seven weeks until spring planting and harvesting start in late February. I often make stupid decisions but I think I'm getting smarter with age. Maybe I'm just getting more tired. We are kind of thinking about maybe a winter vacation sometime.
I still have some aphid problems in the heated greenhouse but they should be under control soon. The beneficial insects should clean them up. If things go well we will have lots of micro greens for winter salads in January and February. Cabbage based cole slaw is a good winter salad but it gets kind of dull after a bit.
For those customers in the Halifax area, we will be at the brewery market this coming Saturday from 7 am till 1 pm. I'm going to sleep the following weekend while everybody else is staying up really late. We hope everyone has a great holiday with friends and family.
Just a few housekeeping notes; remember if you'd like to put your box on hold for a week or two,  do so by the deadline (monday midnight).  You can do this yourself online through our website, if you forgot your password let us know.  Also, if you would like to renew your account let us know with a email preferably before you run out.  If you don't want to renew, it's really helpful to also let us know or put your  account on hold.  If you have a stack of our totes at home, save us some money and return them.
