Hutten Family Farm Newsletter for Monday May 4, 2015

My prediction came true and I planted again on this past Friday. We are getting more land ready right now to put in more crops. The first transplants of nappa, broccoli, caraflex cabbage, kohlrabi, and lettuces will go into the field today. They will also be covered with row covers. It is warm enough for these crops to go without the covers but the covers will protect the crops from insect damage. I'll try to send more updates at least once a week but they will be short because I'm getting super busy. The community around us is totally into spring work today. You can hear the dull drone of diesel engines working soil all around the valley now. With the spring so late getting started we are all very anxious to get going.
Last week in Halifax we had several CSA boxes not picked up on Wednesday again. If you cannot get your box at the grainery between 2:30 and 6:30 this Wednesday please put your box on "hold" for the week. You have until midnight tonight to do this. Boxes not picked up by 6:30 will be donated to charity. I realize this makes it difficult for a few people but the option to put your box on hold should help. If the pickup times are an ongoing problem please contact me and we will work something out. Thanks.
There should be a bag of overwintered Russian kale in the boxes this week. This kale is VERY tender and is delicious in salad. I rub a little lime juice on the leaves. I realize that lime juice is not local but I like it.
Have a great week and enjoy the awesome weather. Our snow is basically gone.
