Hutten Family Farm Newsletter for Monday Jul 19, 2010

Sorry I'm late getting the newsletter out this week.  We enjoyed a bit of vacation time this past week and we're a little behind.  The weather has been about the best possible for growing with both sun and rain, it almost feels tropical.  Things are growing fast and we are progressing through crops quickly.  With the humidity and moisture the raspberries don't last long on the bush and the currants are ripe all at once instead of over a number of weeks.  We should be clearing out the greenhouse of the last transplants this week and continuing to work on the hand weeding in the fields.  It's difficult work with the humidity and heat and I'm looking forward to mid August when there won't be so much weeding anymore.
We've had some requests for more traditional type vegetables in the boxes so this week we plan to have broccoli, beans, snow peas, fennel, blueberries, apples and cucumber in the standard box.  Here is a recipe sent to me by a customer.

Fennel and Orange Salad (from World Vegetarian by Madhur Jaffrey)
from Morocco

*use half her recipe, with one bulb of fennel

2 fresh medium fennel bulbs, cut crosswise into paper-thin slices (food processor or mandoline)
2 navel oranges, peeled and cut into skinless segments (I just sliced each half-orange into 1/4 inch thick slices)
6 tbsp fresh orange juice
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tsp salt (I used less)
1 tsp sugar
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon

Mix all, toss well, refrigerate for at least an hour.
